Budget Hotels in Bangkok – Advice From an Expert

Most first time tourist planning a visit to Bangkok wonder where the best budget hotels are. Or they wonder about the quality of the rooms, the helpfulness of hotel staff and most importantly the location. The good news is there are plenty of quality budget hotels in the center of Bangkok. But choosing the right one could make the difference between an enjoyable vacation or a dismal experience.

Most of Bangkok’s budget hotel’s room rates range from $25 USD to $50 USD. It’ better to figure out the quality of a hotel by how much the room rates are rather then knowing how many stars the hotel is deemed. What most people are not aware of is that local hotels rate themselves. It’s the International hotels in Bangkok that are rated by an outside source.

However, all budget hotels in Bangkok are locally owned. So obviously the temptation to add a star when it shouldn’t be added is too great. So it’s best to look at the room rates and figure from there on about whether or not you want to do further research on a particular hotel.

The rule of thumb is that for $25USD to $50USD you can snag a room at a decent quality budget hotel in Bangkok. Usually hotels with those low rates include free breakfast, either a buffet or a set breakfast plate. Some even have swimming pools, such as the Woraburi Sukhumvit Resort and Hotel which is located in a very popular area in Bangkok.

Which brings me to the point that even in the center of Bangkok near all the hub of activities and transportation you can still find a pretty decent hotel room. For example the Regent Silom Hotel cost 1200 Baht ($35USD) for a standard room and it’s right in the heart of the business district of Silom. That’s a very popular nightlife district as well as very close to Bangkok’s efficient train systems.

So even if you find a budget hotel at the edge of Bangkok for 1030 Baht ($30USD) with no city train systems nearby you should pass on it. If you spend just a little bit more you can be right in the heart of the city and cut down on commuting time which is better spent on sight seeing.

One thing that all budget travelers to Bangkok must know is that even though the rooms are clean you will have to sacrifice certain things such as a window view or bed sheets with a high thread count. And more than likely the hotel’s staff, no matter how hard working they are, may not know a single word of English or any other foreign language. Mis-communications does happen but always remain calm as Thais are very accommodating and will usually find some way to understand your needs.

Look at it as an adventure in a foreign country and if you look at the bright side you’re saving money which could be used on a nice traditional Thai massage everyday instead.
